Eta creates strong rip currents, no damage in St. Johns County

ST. AUGUSTINE BEACH, Fla. —

St. Johns County Emergency Management reports no damage or power outages after Eta passed over Thursday morning. However, St. Augustine Beach took another beating, with strong surf and rip currents in the storm’s wake.

Emergency Management says the winds will last through about 1 p.m., but the rip currents could continue well into the night and early Friday morning.

Action News Jax’s Robert Grant reported from St. Augustine Beach on Sunday when Eta was in South Florida stirring up heavy waves in Northeast Florida. Several areas were already under repair by the Army Corps of Engineers because of September’s Nor’easter.

Emergency Management in St. Johns told Action News Jax that crews would survey for beach erosion once the storm has cleared.

Two brothers from Albany, NY, were headed to Crystal River, FL, to see their brother. They stayed in St. Augustine overnight to avoid driving through the storm.

“Once the storm hit, we pulled over and hit a hotel last night to get out of the rain. The truck was taking on water,” William Kennedy said. Their truck was leaking water through the door after strong storms passed over Wednesday night.
