‘Packed and ready to go’: Fans, out-of-towners make last stop at THE PLAYERS for extra day

Monday marked a bonus day at TPC Sawgrass for fans who missed out on THE PLAYERS Championship over the weekend, or wanted to take advantage of extra time.

On Monday morning, a trickle of fans made their way in.

“Less crowd, which is actually great and the weather’s amazing,” said Thomas Ngyuen, as he passed the entrance.

Throughout the weekend, fans had to deal with rain, pauses, crowds and delays.

“We came out here Saturday,” Ngyuen said. “And how was that?” Action News Jax reporter Jessica Barreto asked. “It was terrible, actually,” he replied with a chuckle.

“We were supposed to come here on Friday, and we got rained out,” said Marielle Obuchowski.

She lives out-of-state with her sister Lauren Apolito. The sisters took this event as a last chance to have a girls’ day out with their daughters: Dagny Obuchowski, 2, and Angelina Apolito, 1.

“I was pumped, we’re leaving today, going back to Rhode Island,” Obuchowski said when she heard Monday would be added to the schedule.

“Bags are in the car, we’re packed and ready to go to the airport,” she explained.

“We dropped the kids off at school, my husband went to work, and we’re having a mommy and me day,” Apolito shared.

It was a milestone moment for Apolito.

“So the last time she was here,” she was in my belly,” Apolito said as she looked at her daughter, referencing a picture she took while she was pregnant at THE PLAYERS in 2020 before COVID-19 shut down the tournament.

Apolito said it felt great to be back.

It worked out well for 10-year-old Mateo Urresti and his dad Jose, too.

“We’re going to the practice range to see some people practice and then we’re going — we live in Virginia so we’re going to the airport,” he said.

“Hang by 17, definitely stop by the refreshment tents and see some cool players,” Apolito said of how the rest of her day will look.

“Just walking, seeing the players, all the people getting the shots,” Urresti added.
