St. Augustine neighbors concerned over safety at U.S. 1 intersection

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Neighbors in St. Augustine are expressing concerns about traffic safety outside of the Las Calinas subdivision.

  • Neighbors said a traffic light was installed, but it hasn’t been activated. Action News Jax drove by the light and found it was blinking in both directions of U.S. 1.
  • Action News Jax reached out to the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners to find out when the traffic light project started and why it’s not working yet, but we’re waiting on a response.
  • Neighbors said there have been multiple crashes at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Las Calinas Blvd. Action News Jax requested the number of crashes the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office has worked and found there were nine crashes in 2019, seven in 2018, five in 2017 and eight in 2016.
  • The St. Johns County Traffic Engineer said the traffic light isn’t operating yet because there have been several issues pointed out for repair during Florida Department of Transportation and County inspections.
  • The Traffic Engineer told Action News Jax there were two separate inspections this week to get the final punchlist to the contractor. The contractor expects to complete those items by the middle of next week.
