State-of-the-art facility for sexual assault survivors opens in Jacksonville

A state-of-the-art facility for sex assault survivors will soon open its doors in Jacksonville.

The Sexual Assault Forensic Exam, or SAFE Center, run by the Women’s Center of Jacksonville, is the only certified rape crisis center in Duval, Nassau and Baker counties.

With private exam rooms and entrances and a counseling center, the facility aims to support survivors after a sexual assault and as they heal.

“Every single detail was thought of when they built this building,” said Lt. Sharon Scott, of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office special assault unit. “It’s a safe place for them to come and make their report.”

The center houses two forensic exam rooms, counseling offices, permanent and temporary evidence storage, separate entrances for privacy and space for law enforcement personnel.

“They have a singular focus of caring for that victim,” Sheriff Mike Williams said.

The center said renovations to the building are complete but it still needs funds to ensure it can support sexual assault survivors around the clock.
