Surveillance cameras capture St. Augustine man hit by car, family nearly run down in own driveway

Surveillance cameras show a St. Augustine man get hit by a car in his own driveway, before his wife and daughter are nearly run down.

St. Augustine police are searching for the vehicle involved in Monday night’s incident, described as a red Mustang convertible.

The video shows the car hit David Powell, then rev its engine and start to take off, before narrowly missing Powell’s wife and daughter, who jumped out of the way.

The incident is so loud it sets off a nearby car alarm.

“They certainly didn’t have a problem bumping into me, and if my family hadn’t been able to move out in time it would not have been a pretty sight,” Powell said.

Powell said these people acted in a suspicious manner well before hitting him around 8 p.m.

Powell went back to the area between his adjoining homes to confront them and said they were making circles in his grass, out of view of his cameras.

He said they tried to pry open his fence.  He later found the damage left behind.

He believes they were trying to get away from someone.

“They were willing to take three people out to get out of here without getting caught,” Powell said.

Powell’s cameras also caught the car first arriving at his home, and passed the tag number along to officers.

His family has never seen the car around before.

Police said the driver is wanted for leaving the scene of a crash that resulted in injury and reckless driving.

“What was so important to flee and be willing to take out three people?” Powell said.
