PONTE VEDRA, Fla. - St. Johns County sheriff’s deputies have released new information concerning an attempted home burglary that happened in Ponte Vedra.

Wednesday, Action News Jax told you about an elderly couple who woke up to a man in their closet with a flashlight.

St Johns County deputies believe 26-year-old John Matthew Kennedy is the person who sneaked into that home. He was spotted near Canal Street Thursday afternoon. When deputies tried to approach him to ask a few questions they said he ran off. He was found hours later Thursday evening on Canal Street after jumping a neighbor's fence and hiding near the water.

Neighbors like Rich Gerrity who live inside Ponte Vedra at the Sea had nothing but great things to say about the neighborhood.

“It’s an awesome neighborhood people love living here. I’ve been here 19 years,” Gerrity said.

Rich Gerrity and his wife said it’s usually quiet in the area, which is why they were shocked when they learned about a neighbor nearby waking up to an intruder in their home.

"This is surprising that this has actually happened,” Gerrity said.

Although this incident was unnerving neighbors said it was rare.

“Yeah I’m sure it’s a one-off, probably never happen again,” Gerrity said.

Police have detained Kennedy for questioning and this incident is still under investigation.
