• Suspect in tortoise torture case bonds out of jail


    GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. - One of two teenagers charged with torturing a gopher tortoise is out of jail.

    The bond for Jennifer Emoke Greene, 18, was reduced at a court appearance Wednesday morning.

    Greene and a 15-year-old face cruelty to animal charges, a third-degree felony, and a second-degree misdemeanor charge of harassing, harming or killing a gopher turtle.

    Authorities say the two set a tortoise on fire, stomped it to death and posted video of the torture on the Internet.

    The gopher tortoise is a protected species in Florida.

    Greene will be back in court on Sept. 9.  She also faces one charge of lewd and lascivious battery on a 15-year-old boy.
