"The pursuit ended the way it should:" Nassau sheriff won't review policies after high-speed chase

The Nassau County Sheriff tells Action News Jax the agency will not review its policies following a high-speed chase Monday in Yulee.

Dash-camera video showed deputies on a high-speed chase through construction zones and busy roads.

The Sheriff’s Office said Joshua Spillis, 26, drove against traffic and nearly hit several other vehicles before being caught in a Yulee neighborhood.

We showed the video to Action News Jax Law and Safety Expert Dale Carson, an attorney and a former FBI investigator.

“Now they’re passing cars,” Carson said watching the video.  “Course, this can be a van full of children coming from school that could’ve been struck by either the law enforcement officer or the person that’s fleeing.”

Carson said law enforcement needs uniform pursuit policies.

“There needs to be a particular rule that’s followed by law enforcement to avoid potential injury to other people when the flight may simply be over a traffic ticket that hasn’t been paid,” Carson said.

Deputies said they initially stopped Spillis for having a busted window and expired tag.  They also suspected him in a theft.

Action News Jax asked Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper if their policy of leaving pursuits up to a deputy’s discretion will be reviewed.

In a statement he said, “The policy is fine the way it is.  The pursuit ended the way it should.  Capture the bad guy and no one got hurt.”
