Here’s what we can expect from these systems, according to Action News Jax First Alert Chief Meteorologist Mike Buresh:

  • A strong tropical wave is moving into the Caribbean Wednesday night and into Thursday. The First Alert Weather Team expects the system to become a tropical storm and then possibly a hurricane impacting the Caribbean through the weekend and into early next week before turning more northward to the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane hunters will check out this wave Wednesday night and periodically the rest of the week, then nearly constantly if it does strengthen. Possible impacts to the U.S. would happen late next week and into next weekend (not this weekend).
  • Hurricane Fiona, which is a Category 4 storm, is moving north and will reach Jacksonville’s latitude Thursday afternoon, but will be 800 to 900 miles to the east. Fiona will move to near and just west of Bermuda on Friday morning. The system will be in the northwest Atlantic near Nova Scotia and Newfoundland in Canada by the weekend.
  • Tropical Storm Gaston and two tropical waves over the east Atlantic look to stay out to sea and are not a threat to the U.S.
