Troopers investigating hit-and-run in Middleburg

MIDDLEBURG, Fla. — Florida Highway Patrol troopers are searching for the driver who hit a local 43-year-old man in Middleburg, and left him in a ditch.

Kevin Helm is being treated for life-threatening injuries early Sunday morning. Troopers say Helm was walking along Hibiscus Avenue when he was hit by someone in a white vehicle and thrown into this ditch.

Helm was in the ditch critically injured for eight hours.

FHP believes the victim was hit around 3:30 a.m., but the crash wasn't reported until after 11 a.m.

The incident happened on a stretch of road with no sidewalks or bicycle lanes.

Troopers are working to learn more about the driver of a white vehicle. They don't have the make or model but it's believed to have extensive damage to its front right-end near the headlight area.

Helm was life-flighted to UF Health in critical condition. But, when Action News called for an update Monday morning, a representative said there was no record of him.
