TSA confiscated 460 guns at airports across Florida, including Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Transportation Security Administration is warning holiday travelers to leave their weapons at home before making their way to the airport.

So far this year, agents have intercepted more than 460 guns at airports across the state.

When travelers roll their suitcases through the airport, they're usually trying to make it to their plane on time.

But items like these can bring checkpoint lines to a stop.

"I travel all the time and I've seen people bring some wild things," traveler Bill Heitzenrater said.

It's not just guns they're catching.

They've found brass knuckles, bats, knives, and stun guns.

"TSA officers have stopped 41 guns year to date in Jacksonville. We have stopped more than 460 across the state of Florida," said TSA spokesperson Sari Koshetz.

"It's scary, really scary," said Debra Gadson.

Airport Director Michael Stewart says his agents run into the issue every day, especially during the holiday season.

"We're going to have a lot of traffic here," Stewart said.

If you bring your weapon to the airport, Koshetz says you can be arrested or fined up to $13,000.

"The information of training people so that they know what they shouldn't bring could be improved and will speed things up a little bit," Heitzenrater explained.

"You don't know what's going to happen and you're hoping nothing happens," said Gadson.

TSA agents want travelers to do themselves and everyone else a favor, double-check your bags because it's your safety they're trying to protect.
