Two women accused of stealing wallet at Atlantic Beach restaurant, going shopping

An Atlantic Beach woman is the latest victim in a string of thefts targeting women at the beach.
Atlantic Beach police released surveillance images of two women accused of stealing a woman's wallet from her purse while it was hanging on the back of a chair at Poe’s Tavern.
The victim was sitting at a high-top table in the bar area.

“It makes you rethink going to lunch and hanging a bag on the back of your chair,” said MaryLou Rinehart, who had just finished having lunch with a friend in Atlantic Beach.

Atlantic Beach police say the suspected thieves went to Target on Beach Boulevard and GameStop next door, trying to spend more than $1,000 on electronics and gift cards.

“The fact that it’s women completely throws me because you’re always kind of leery of maybe a guy hanging around. But with women, you don’t think that as much,” said Atlantic Beach diner Kelly Touhey.

Last week, Action News Jax reported 31 phones have been stolen at Jacksonville Beach bars since the beginning of the year.

Most of the victims were women.
