Voters pass proposition to dissolve Town of Hastings in St. Johns County

Voters in Hastings have passed a proposition to dissolve the town.

Neighbors passed a measure Tuesday to dissolve the town and formally become a member of the St. Johns County government.

The measure passed 82 percent to 17 percent. One-hundred thirty-six voters voted yes and 29 voted no.

Residents say years of mismanagement have left the small town on the brink of financial failure.

The county will take on $1 million in Hastings debt. The county said it was better to act now than wait until the situation got worse.

Hastings becomes part of the county in March 2018.
