Warrant: Former Jacksonville teacher had sexual encounter with student while his baby was sleeping

Aaron Zuniga, 28

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A former Trinity Christian Academy teacher accused of having sex with a student had an encounter with the student at his home while his baby was sleeping, according to a warrant from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Aaron Zuniga, 28, is charged with unlawful sexual activity with a minor. Action News Jax first reported Thursday that Zuniga was fired.

According to an arrest warrant from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, police were notified March 19 that Zuniga had sex with a student.

The warrant said Zuniga resigned from his job and told Head of School David Welling that he had a sexual relationship with the student two weeks ago.

Zuniga said the student would not tell because she "did not want to ruin her school career," the warrant said.

Police later interviewed Zuniga and he said he had an "emotional relationship" with the student and that he had "physical contact." When police asked him to expound on the physical contact, he asked for a lawyer.

Police also interviewed the victim and she initially denied any sexual contact with Zuniga. In a second interview, the victim told police that "she and the suspect flirted in person and via Snapchat text messages."

She told police she was invited to Zuniga's house under the impression she would be babysitting his 10-month-old child. When the victim arrived at Zuniga's home, he put the baby down for a nap, according to the warrant.

While the baby was sleeping in the baby's room, Zuniga and the victim had a "sexual encounter" on the suspect's tan couch in the living room. The victim told police the acts were consensual and this was the only encounter between them.

Zuniga is being held on $200,000 bond. He is due to be back in court April 15.
