Four names of local heroes added to Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Wall

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — On Monday, the names of four hometown heroes were added to the Duval County Veterans Memorial Wall.

This Memorial Day included a special tribute to Jacksonville’s living D-Day veterans.

Rod Hughes daughter, Sgt. Brittney Mitchell was among the service members engraved on the wall.

Hughes explained, “Everybody said the same thing, about how strong she was, how joyful she was. When she’d go somewhere she’d just be joyful.”

According to Hughes her strength and joy were taken in October 2018.

Investigators said the 27-year-old's estranged husband shot and killed her in Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Hughes called on others, “No more silence, speak out. If things are going wrong just speak out. Don’t be silent, just speak out.”The dad said the ceremony was the show of appreciation his daughter and all other military members deserved.

He described, “For the lost ones, the men and women that serve our country, you know, that’s not here with us anymore.”

Hughes said his family is blessed to be among so many who served and sacrificed.

He added, “It’s going to be a day I never forget.”

The wall located at 1145 E. Adams St, has served as a tribute to 1,700 Jacksonville area Americans heroes since 1995.

It is the only wall that honors veterans from all six service branches including the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine.
