New guidelines come out from the CDC, parents express concerns about masks still being mandatory

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Local districts are holding off on making any changes.

The school year was anything but normal this year, as school leaders had to figure out how to teach during a pandemic.

Desk partitions were put up, students were spread out and masks were a requirement.

In April, the Florida Education Commissioner asked school superintendents to let families decide if students should wear masks at school.

It’s a change some local parents would like to see made.

“It’s not about me, it’s not about my husband, it’s about them,” says Kristy Mizell.

A few parents let their voices be heard at the Nassau County School Board meeting on Thursday.

Local father Joshua Jackson said, “I would like us to lead the state when it comes to parent choice restoring freedom back into the right for me to decide whether or not I want to forcibly cover my child’s face.” The Nassau County superintendent says they’re just trying to get through these last few weeks of school, but hopes masks will no longer be needed by fall.

Parents in St. Johns County had a heated discussion about masks in schools on Tuesday.

School officials have decided to push off on a decision until a later date. Duval County Public Schools just put out this survey.

It is asking the school community to weigh in on a number of safety measures including masks, desk partitions and even temperature checks.
