Officer hurt after crash in Mandarin

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Police held a news conference at 6:10 a.m. regarding the crash that shut down Old St. Augustine Road at I-295. The area reopened around 7:30 a.m.

Here’s what we know:

  • Around 3:20 a.m. Thursday, officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office were attempting to perform a traffic stop with a car, in the area of the Buckman Bridge. Police say the car took off from the officers and exited northbound to Old St. Augustine Road. Officers did not pursue the car.
  • While in that area, the car ran a red light and T-boned the patrol car of an off-duty officer who was driving southbound on Old St. Augustine Road. That officer was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK.
  • The driver of the car ran off following the crash and was later caught by responding officers. That driver was not hurt.

Action News Jax is working to learn if the driver will be facing any charges.
