Police: Scammers claiming to work for government agencies

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. — Putnam County Sheriff's Office warns residents of a telephone scam demanding money.

According to a PCSO news release, the scammers call individuals claiming to be from a government agency, such as the Internal Revenue Service and demand money. The scammers say the money is owed to avoid a penalty or arrest.

The victim is told to put a specific amount of money on a green card to pay over the phone, the release said.

PCSO advises that a government agency or law enforcement office will not contact an individual in this way or demand money. Anyone who is contacted by an individual in this manner should not give any money.

Anyone who is a victim of this scam should contact the police.
