This is serious: Northside Coalition on violent weekend

Jacksonville, FL. — One person is dead, and several others are recovering in a string of shootings across the city of Jacksonville.

Northside Coalition President Ben Frazier said it’s time for a different approach to this issue of gun violence in the city.

Jacksonville police are busy during a day of gun violence in the city.

With separate shootings from Saturday into Sunday, Northside Coalition President Ben Frazier is concerned.

“We think there is a serious problem that needs to be addressed - where are all of these guns coming from,” Frazier said.

Just before 5:30 p.m. late Sunday afternoon, police responded to a crash at Interstate 95 north just before Dunn Avenue where a man was shot. Police said he later died at a hospital.

According to police they believe the initial shooting happened near Edgewood Avenue.

Action News Jax captured a picture of the silver Chevy Malibu the man was driving.

Five hours before this incident, police said a gunman opened fire and hit three people including a 15-year-old.

Police said it happened at around noon at a basketball court at Gardner Sams Memorial Park on Richardson Road.

When officers got there, they spotted a large group of people leaving the park.

Police said two of the victims were taken to UF Health with non-life-threatening injuries and a bullet grazed the 15-year-old’s ankle.

According to police witnesses told officers a man with different clothing descriptions came through the woods near the entrance of the park and began firing a gun toward the basketball court.

Police said the suspect left before officers arrived.

“I think it’s pretty strange that a community that does not manufacture weapons have so many weapons flowing into its boundaries,” said Frazier.

Just 5 miles away police said a teen was shot in the hand by someone while driving along the MLK Jr. Parkway.

Police said the teen was able to drive themselves to a hospital

Frazier said at least three million dollars should be taken from the JSO budget and used to fund programs for jobs and job training specifically in underserved communities.

Police are still looking for suspects in all three shootings.
