Three soldiers were killed Sunday and three others were hurt in a training accident at Fort Stewart, Georgia.

FORT STEWART, Ga. — Three soldiers were killed and three more were injured Sunday during a training accident early Sunday at Fort Stewart in Georgia, officials said.

The soldiers, who are members of the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, were involved in an accident while riding on a Bradley Fighting Vehicle, WSAV reported.

Update 8:16 a.m. EDT Oct.21: Fort Stewart officials said the vehicle involved in Sunday morning's accident rolled over into water at approximately 3:20 a.m. during a scheduled training event, WSAV reported.

Three of the six soldiers were pronounced dead at the scene, and the other three were taken to Winn Army Community Hospital. Two soldiers were treated and released, and one was transferred to a hospital in Savannah with non-life-threatening injuries, the television station reported.

"​​​​​​Today is a heartbreaking day for the 3rd Infantry Division, and the entire Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield community, as we are all devastated after a training accident this morning on the Fort Stewart Training Area," Maj. Gen. Tony Aguto, commanding general of the 3rd Infantry Division, said in a statement. "We are extremely saddened by the loss of three Dogface Soldiers, and injuries to three more. Our hearts and prayers go out to all the families affected by this tragedy."

The names of the soldiers will be released 24 hours after their families are contacted, Fort Stewart officials said.

The incident remains under investigation, WTOC reported.
