Florida police find drugs worth $2M in rented SUV inside hospital parking garage

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — Deputies in South Florida found a cache of drugs worth nearly $2 million Sunday inside an abandoned SUV, which was found in the parking lot of a Broward County hospital, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

Officers from the Broward County Sheriff's Office searched the vehicle and found 9.24 kilograms of fentanyl, a pain-killing drug, according to the Miami Herald. The SUV was parked in the garage at Broward Health North medical center in Pompano Beach, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Deputies searched the SUV, which had been parked in the garage for several days, at 3 a.m. Sunday and found the pills inside a duffel bag under the floorboard of the vehicle's trunk, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

"We know that this is an extremely dangerous drug so the potential for fatality is very high," Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion told WFOR. "We can't determine how many lives have been saved by us finding these drugs but we can definitely say the community as a whole is safer not having these drugs on the street."

The Sheriff's Office said it will test a sample of the pills to determine their potency, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

With fentanyl going for $100 to $200 per gram on the streets, the value could be anywhere between $924,000 and $1.848 million, the Miami Herald reported.

“Depending on the purity of the find, the value can be up to three times as much,” a Sheriff's Office spokesman told the newspaper.
