Good gourd: Tennessee farmer grows 910-pound pumpkin, converts it into a boat

A farmer in east Tennessee grew a 910-pound pumpkin, hollowed it out and decided to have some fun with it, using it as a boat Monday night, WTVC reported.

"It's Washington crossing the Delaware," someone says off-camera in a video that showed Justin Ownby standing in his newly carved boat in the family pond.

After trying for four years to grow a large pumpkin, Ownby did it this year, planting seeds for the gourd in May and tending to it every day, the television station reported.

Ownby's wife, Christin Ownby, said her husband used a seed that came from a pumpkin grown in Tennessee that weighed more than 1,700 pounds, WTVC reported.

"He chose a spot where the water ran off easily, keeping it cool in the heat of the day, keeping it watered and making sure that squash beetles didn’t overtake it," Christin Ownby told the television station.

Monday night, Justin Ownby put the pumpkin in the pond and began paddling around, WKRN reported. But when Ownby did his George Washington impersonation, the pumpkin sank into the water,

"The captain goes down with his ship," someone off-camera says as Ownby's family laughs.

The sunken pumpkin will not go to waste, according to Christin Ownby.

"It will make a great snack for the catfish," she told WTVC.
