Good Samaritan rescues woman from attempted sexual assault by freeway, police say

Police arrested Donald Cramer Jr., 52, of Philadelphia, on several charges, including kidnapping, attempted sexual assault, robbery and aggravated assault.

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. — A good Samaritan is being hailed as a hero after police said he rescued a woman from an attempted sexual assault off a New Jersey freeway.

According to New Jersey State Police, John Bishop was driving on the Interstate 295 exit ramp to state Route 73 in Mount Laurel on Thursday when he saw a man dragging a woman into the woods beside the roadway.

Bishop quickly stopped, pulled onto the shoulder and followed the pair, police said.

"As Mr. Bishop approached the woods, he observed the victim struggling with the man and immediately intervened," police said in a Facebook post Monday.

"Hey, what are you doing? Get off of her!" Bishop recalled telling the man, identified by police as 52-year-old Donald Cramer Jr. of Philadelphia, in a Monday interview with the Burlington County Times.

After Bishop demanded to see the man's hands, Cramer attacked him, Bishop told the newspaper.

The men wrestled until Bishop was able to subdue Cramer, police said.

"I wanted to get him up near the road, so I [dragged] him by the arm and neck up the hill and threw him over the guardrail onto Route 73," Bishop told the Times.

Three other people also pulled over to help Bishop detain Cramer until officers arrived, the newspaper reported.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Her injuries were not considered life-threatening, authorities said.

Investigators said Cramer may have been involved in other sexual assaults. If you have any information, call the Bordentown Criminal Investigation Office at 609-298-1171.
