Washington state deputy fatally shot; suspect killed, police say

Cowlitz County deputy Justin DeRosier was fatally shot Saturday night.

A sheriff's deputy in Washington state was shot and killed Saturday night while attempting to contact a disabled vehicle blocking a rural road in Kalama.

The Cowlitz County deputy was identified as Justin DeRosier, 29, from Kelso. He leaves behind a wife and 5-month-old daughter.

Update, 3:02 a.m. EDT April 15:  Police said early Monday they shot and killed a man suspected of being involved in the shooting death of DeRosier, KXLYreported.

Authorities said none of the officers who responded to the scene in Kalama were injured, the television station reported. The suspect has not been identified.

Sheriff Brad Thurman said it was the agency's first death in the line of duty in its 165-year history, CNN reported.

The shooting happened at 10:11 p.m. The officer responded to a disabled vehicle blocking the road and was shot shortly after arriving. The officer received lifesaving efforts at the scene.

DeRosier was airlifted to PeaceHealth Medical Center in Vancouver where he died in surgery.

Deputies said they have a person of interest in the shooting and are continuing to investigate and follow up on other leads.
