EDWARDSBURG, Mich. — Police in Michigan believe a 12-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed a 15-year-old girl at an Edwardsburg home over the weekend, multiple news outlets are reporting.
According to WBND and WNDU, the incident occurred about 1:45 p.m. Sunday at a Maple Street home. Ontwa Township Edwardsburg police said someone removed a firearm from a safe. The boy, who believed the gun was not loaded, then fired the weapon at the girl, killing her, police told WBND.
Investigators questioned the boy but did not take him into custody, the news outlets reported. The Cass County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case, authorities said.
Medical examiners will conduct an autopsy on the teen Monday, according to the news outlets.
