According to city officials, the incident occurred at the LyondellBasell plant in La Porte at about 7:30 p.m. CDT, KTRK reported.

Officials said an acetic acid leak occurred at the facility, KPRC reported.

“Right now we can confirm two fatalities,” Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office spokesperson Rachel K. Neutzler told CNN.

There was no immediate information about the fatalities.

Officials with Harris County Pollution Control are at the scene conducting air monitoring, according to KHOU. They said the leak was isolated and there was no offsite impact, the television station reported.

“The area is in unincorporated Harris County, adjacent to the City of La Porte,” La Porte Emergency Medical Services said in a statement. “There is no shelter in place or other protective actions being recommended for the La Porte community at this time.”

According to a tweet posted just before 9 p.m. CDT, Atascocita officials called the incident a “chemical release,” KTRK reported.
