Alabama couple charged in hot car death of toddler son

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ala. — An Alabama couple is behind bars after their toddler son died in a hot car, authorities said.

According to The Associated Press and WHNT, Franklin County sheriff's deputies arrested Brandi Burks, 22, and Dakota Fowler, 20, on manslaughter charges in the death of their 3-year-old son, Bentley, who was discovered unresponsive in a vehicle about 4 p.m. Sunday. Emergency responders weren't able to save the child, officials said.

Although the couple said they had put the boy to bed around midnight, deputies believe the parents might have forgotten that the toddler was still inside the car after they returned home from a friend's house about 11:30 p.m. Saturday, WHNT reported.

Burks and Fowler are being held on $500,000 bond each, according to WHNT.
