Alabama woman attempting to bail out boyfriend winds up in jail

ATHENS, Ala. — An Alabama woman who showed up to bail her boyfriend out of jail wound up behind bars, authorities said Tuesday.

According to the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office, Mariah Carole Cook, 27, of Madison, showed up at the county jail in a vehicle investigators believed was used in multiple burglaries, WZDX reported. According to the sheriff’s office, investigators recovered stolen and switched plates, drugs including methamphetamine, a gun, a counterfeit $100 bill and evidence of other thefts, WAAY reported.

Cook was charged with possession of a controlled substance and was being held in the Limestone County Jail, WHNT reported. Bail was set at $2,500.

Cook’s boyfriend, Jesse Gene Johnson, 33, had been arrested Monday night on charges of breaking and entering vehicles and receiving stolen property, the television station reported. He was later charged with first-degree possession of a forged instrument, two counts of first-degree theft and one count of third-degree burglary, according to online booking records.

Bail on the original charges was set at $20,000, WAAY reported. The sheriff’s office said bail had not yet been set for the new charges.
