College Football Playoff: Georgia vs. Ohio State, Michigan vs. TCU

Unbeaten Georgia and Michigan cruised into the College Football Playoff on Sunday, while TCU and Ohio State rounded out the final four after a weekend of upsets.

No. 1 Georgia will face No. 4 Ohio State in the Peach Bowl at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, while No. 2 Michigan will face No. 3 TCU in the Fiesta Bowl at Glendale, Arizona.

Both games will be played on Dec. 31. The Fiesta Bowl will kick off at 4 p.m. EST, with the Peach Bowl starting at 8 p.m. EST.

The choices mirrored the final Associated Press top 25 poll of the regular season. Georgia (13-0), the defending national champions, remained No. 1 for the ninth consecutive week and received 62 first-place votes. Michigan (13-0) received the other first-place vote. TCU and Ohio State took the third and fourth spots in the AP poll.

The winner of the Fiesta Bowl will face the victor of the Peach Bowl game at 7:30 p.m. EST on Jan. 9, 2023, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

The top-ranked Bulldogs rolled into the tournament with a 50-30 victory against LSU in the SEC Championship Game on Saturday night. It was the first time since 2017 that the Bulldogs won the outright conference championship, WSB-TV reported.

Georgia is looking for its second consecutive national title. The Bulldogs defeated No. 1 Alabama 33-18 in the 2022 title game.

Michigan struggled before putting away pesky Purdue (8-5) 43-22 in the Big Ten Football Championship Game on Saturday night. It was the Wolverines’ second consecutive conference crown.

Ohio State (11-1) and Alabama (10-2) were hoping to sneak into the final four after TCU and USC lost this weekend.

The Buckeyes, who moved up one spot to No. 4 ahead of Alabama and Tennessee, needed TCU or USC to lose to have a chance. The Crimson Tide needed both teams to lose to have a chance.

Ohio State and Alabama both got their wish, but only the Buckeyes benefited.

USC (11-2) lost 47-24 to Utah on Friday night as the Utes won their second straight Pac-12 title ESPN reported. No. 3 TCU (12-1) lost 31-28 in overtime to Kansas State in the Big Eight title game, The Dallas Morning News reported.

TCU and Ohio State are the fifth and sixth teams to make the CFP without winning a conference title, according to ESPN.
