Coronavirus: Florida men tell CVS clerk they have virus, then steal Corona beer, police say

Two South Florida men are accused of telling a CVS clerk they had the coronavirus and then stealing two cases of Corona beer, authorities said.

Steven Cyriacks, 32, of Margate, and Zavier Ahmad Permenter, 42, of Pompano Beach, are facing charges that include petit theft to auto theft, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred Tuesday about 3:25 p.m. at the store, located in Coconut Creek, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

According to an arrest report, the men walked into the CVS and told the clerk they had “the virus,” the Miami Herald reported. Cyriacks and Permenter then took the beer and some laundry detergent before fleeing in a white Chevrolet van, the newspaper reported.

The clerk wrote down the license number of the van and called 911, according to the Sun-Sentinel. Police said the van had been reported stolen in Fort Lauderdale, according to the arrest report.

The van was spotted moments later by a detective and the two men were pulled over, the newspaper reported. Cyriacks jumped out of the driver’s seat of the van and ran about 75 yards before he was caught, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

Cyriacks was charged with shoplifting, grand theft of an automobile and resisting arrest, according to Broward County Jail records. Permenter was charged with petit theft and being an accessory to a third-degree felony.

Both men are being held without bail in the Broward County Jail, the Herald reported.
