Happy Happy Joy Joy: Comedy Central green lights ‘Ren & Stimpy’ reboot

After almost 25 years, Comedy Central says it will reinvent the adult animated series ‘The Ren & Stimpy Show.'

The new series will be based off the Emmy Award-nominated cartoon that originally aired from 1991 to 1996 on Nickelodeon. ViacomCBS, who owns both Comedy Central and Nickelodeon will hire a creative team for the show and says it will be updated for a new generation, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“We are excited to reinvent this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio. Ren & Stimpy joins our rapidly expanding roster of adult animation including South Park, Beavis and Butt-Head and Clone High as we continue to re-imagine our treasure chest of beloved IP for new generations,” Chris McCarthy, president of ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group told TVLine.

Details on when the series will premiere and how many episodes are expected have not been released.

Nickelodeon’s popular animated cable TV series first aired in 1991 and doubled its ratings the following year.

“The Ren & Stimpy Show” will join Comedy Central’s re-imagined “Beavis and Butt-Head,” announced last month. Comedy Central said Beavis and Butt-Head will return for two seasons as part of a deal with the series’ original creator, Mike Judge, and 3 Arts Entertainment, Variety reported.
