‘Home Improvement’ star Zachery Ty Bryan pleads guilty to charges in Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. — Zachery Ty Bryan, who starred in the 1990s television comedy “Home Improvement,” was sentenced to 36 months of bench probation in Oregon after pleading guilty to a pair of domestic violence charges.

Bryan, 39, who played Tim Allen’s oldest son Brad Taylor in all 203 episodes of “Home Improvement” from 1991 to 1999, was charged with menacing and assault in the fourth degree constituting domestic violence, Lane County District Attorney Patricia Perlow said in a statement.

Six other charges, which included harassment, coercion, strangulation, interference with making a police report and two additional counts of menacing and assault in the fourth degree, were all dismissed, Lane County Assistant District Attorney Alex Pierce, who handed the case, told “Today” via email.

Other conditions of the guilty plea were that Bryan must participate in a batterer intervention program and must have no contact with the victim, USA Today reported.

“He was sentenced to 36 months of bench probation, with conditions of probation including the program Bridges2Safety and no contact with the victim as well as the other standard conditions in a domestic violence sentencing,” according to Perlow’s statement.

An attorney for Bryan did not immediately respond to a request for comment, People reported.

According to the Eugene Police Department, officers responded to a call of a physical dispute at a North Eugene apartment on Oct. 16, 2020, The Associated Press reported. Police found Bryan sitting outside, while his 27-year-old girlfriend was at a neighboring apartment.

According to police, Bryan reportedly assaulted the victim, impeded her breathing, and took her phone away when she tried to call 911, the AP reported.

Since “Home Improvement” finished its run, Bryan has appeared in several movies, including “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift,” KOIN reported. His most recent acting role was in the TV movie “Thor: Hammer of the Gods” in 2009, according to Bryan’s IMDb page.

Bryan has four children with his wife, Carly Matros, whom he married in 2007.
