According to KTRK and KHOU, the incident occurred about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Beechnut and Southwest Freeway in Houston. During a police chase, a robbery suspect crashed at a Chevron station where a woman, whose baby was still inside her car, was pumping gas, the outlets reported.
The armed suspect, described as “a man in his 30s,” approached the woman’s vehicle and got inside, Houston police said. Officers ordered him to drop his gun and exit the vehicle, but he did not comply, KTRK reported.
An officer, who did not see the child inside the car, then opened fire at the man, killing him and inadvertently wounding the baby, authorities said. The child, who was rushed to a nearby hospital, is now in stable condition, according to KTRK.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office and the Houston Police Department’s internal affairs unit are investigating the incident, KHOU reported.
