Mackenzi Alexander received a call at 5:20 p.m. EDT Wednesday, the Northwest Indiana Times reported. A woman was in labor and did not have enough time to get to an area hospital, so Alexander, who was in the area, went to the home, according to the newspaper.

When Alexander arrived, the woman in labor was distraught and believed there might be something wrong with the baby, WANE-TV reported.

The trooper made the woman comfortable while waiting for first responders to arrive at the home, according to the television station. Alexander also began timing the woman’s contractions, which were a minute apart, and gathered some towels and blankets in anticipation of the birth, according to the Times.

Moments later, volunteer firefighters arrived and assisted Alexander with the delivery. The trooper had to unwrap the baby’s umbilical cord from around the infant’s neck and arm, the Dubois County Free Press reported.

“Local EMS arrived on scene a few minutes later to clamp and cut the umbilical cord,” the Indiana State Patrol said in its report.

The mother and baby were transported to an area hospital and are doing well, according to WANE.
