Shana Lowell, of Maurepas, drives to Baton Rouge twice a week to donate plasma, KALB-TV reported. The money she receives goes toward defraying the costs of vet bills for Kodiak, her 13-year-old Pomeranian. Lowell also started selling dreamcatchers and baked goods, including brownies, pralines, pies, and muffins, according to WVLA-TV. Lowell also has created a GoFundMe page to help raise funds.

According to the Humane Society of Louisiana, an MRI for Kodiak can cost between $2,500 and $3,000, WVLA-TV reported.

The dog’s veterinarian told KALB that the MRI was necessary to determine whether Kodiak has an infection in the spine or a bulging or slipped disc.

“Kodiak is my life and has been with me through some rough times, so I want to do whatever I can to help him and make him pain-free for however many years he has left,” Lowell told the television station. “I don’t expect a whole lot because everyone has their own problems and money is tight for so many people, but even if it’s $5, my heart is totally warmed from any support I get.”

Lowell has already surpassed her goal of $4,000. As of late Thursday, more than $5,000 had been pledged.

Kodiak will remain on anti-inflammatory drugs and steroids until she can have her MRI, KALB reported.

“Shana is a true hero,” HSLA Director Jeff Dorson told the television station. “I have never heard of anyone selling their plasma to help raise money for their pet’s veterinary care. We are happy to help Shana’s cause, and I hope and pray that others in her community and the surrounding areas help Shana reach her goal.”
