Man accused of swinging machete at people, then stealing police cruiser

LUNENBURG, Vt. — A northeastern Vermont man is accused of swinging a machete at people and then stealing a police cruiser after he managed to wriggle free from his restraints, authorities said.

Jeremy Way, 51, of Lunenburg, was charged with escape, aggravated domestic assault, and driving under the influence, according to WCAX-TV.

According to the Essex County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to a report of a man swinging a machete at people in Lunenburg, WPTZ-TV reported.

Based on the statements from witnesses, Way was arrested, handcuffed and placed in a cruiser, according to the television station.

While a deputy was getting evidence and written statements, Way allegedly escaped from his handcuffs and commandeered the cruiser, driving away, WPTZ reported.

Deputies were able to locate the cruiser in another part of Lunenburg, according to WCAX. The vehicle was damaged and Way had fled the scene.

He was found in the woods near the cruiser and taken into custody a second time, according to the television station.
