BUSHTON, Kan. — A charging bison that was killed after charging and injuring a sheriff’s deputy in Kansas, is blamed for goring its owner to death a day before.
The Ellsworth County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that one of their deputies, who responded to a call that a bison was found on a highway, was hurt while attempting to return the animal to its pasture when the bison suddenly charged him.
A deputy from Rice County was able to kill the bison before it attacked the deputy again, The Associated Press reported. The injured deputy was taken to the hospital, where he underwent surgery and is in stable condition, Ellsworth County Sheriff Murray Marston told the AP.
The next day, a woman called 911, saying that she had found her nephew dead in a pen and said that she thought a bison had killed him, KWCH reported.
Marston said in the news release that the preliminary cause of death for the victim was goring by animal, and that the deputy was injured approximately a quarter of a mile from where the man was found dead.
The victim was identified as Scott Schroeder, 56, who owned the 20-plus bison that were being kept on the property where he was killed, the AP reported.
