NJ man on rampage injured 4, stole vehicles, caused 2 crashes, assaulted woman, police say

GLASSBORO, N.J. — A New Jersey man is facing 27 charges following a rampage that caused two vehicle crashes and injured four people, including a police officer.

The violent spree began Friday morning after Andrew M. Tolbert, 23, “kicked several individuals out of his family’s home,” NJ.com reported, citing an affidavit of probable cause filed by police.

According to police, Tolbert then allegedly walked to a neighbor’s home, stole a pickup truck and drove against traffic as he fled, triggering an accident involving two other vehicles. One driver was injured and trapped in an overturned Honda Pilot, the news outlet reported.

“Tolbert exited the Ford F150 and attempted to take a GMC Yukon from a female driver that had stopped for the crash,” the Glassboro Police Department wrote on Facebook. “However she was able to lock him out of the vehicle. Tolbert then entered a 2006 BMW that was left unattended when the driver exited to assist those involved in the crash.”

Police say Tolbert then drove to NovaCare Rehabilitation in Glassboro, walked inside and pulled down his pants, exposing his genitals to staff and patients, NJ.com reported.

He then allegedly told an employee to “come here” and tried repeatedly to pull the woman into a separate room while attempting to pull down her pants before attempting to force her to perform oral sex, the charges state.

The NovaCare employee did not sustain serious injuries, and two patients forced Tolbert out of the building, Fox News reported.

In his attempt to flee, Tolbert then crashed the BMW into one of the responding police vehicles, pinning Officer Darien Martinez between his open door and the police cruiser. Martinez was treated at a hospital for a rib injury and released, the network reported.

According to police, Tolbert then led officers on a chase before he ran head-on into a Ford Escort. The force of the crash ejected a passenger from that vehicle, NJ.com reported.

The 63-year-old driver and 27-year-old passenger from the Escort suffered moderate injuries, while the 40-year-old driver hurt in the first crash suffered minor injuries. All three were treated and released from Cooper University Hospital in Camden, the news outlet reported.

Following the crash, Tolbert “refused to exit the BMW” where “several less-than-lethal options were used [to] effect his arrest,” including pepper spray, a stun gun and K9 deployment, Fox News reported.

As he was being taken to an ambulance, Tolbert “purposely spit blood into the face” of another officer who was transported to the hospital and treated for blood exposure, according to the department.

Tolbert was treated for minor injuries at Cooper and released into police custody. The charges filed against Tolbert include multiple counts of assault, assault by auto, carjacking, attempted aggravated sexual assault, criminal sexual contact and resisting arrest.
