Police: teacher left children home alone while she vacationed in Florida

WATERTOWN, Conn. — A woman is facing charges for allegedly leaving her two children home alone in Connecticut while she went to Florida with her boyfriend for a long weekend.

Court documents say Caviasca’s ex-husband called police to say the two children, both under the age of 12, were left home alone from Nov. 20 to 22 and missed school that Monday, WFSB reported.

According to the arrest warrant, the ex-husband saw text messages between the children and Caviasca, some of which revealed she told the children to “just eat candy” when the children asked what they should eat while she was gone, WFSB reported.

Court documents show Caviasca also told her children to stay in the basement in the texts, and then asked one of the children to delete the messaging app from the phone, WVIT reported.

Police said Caviasca told them she had gone to Florida for the weekend but said she had left the children with her brother, WTNH reported. Police contacted her brother’s employer who said he had been at work all three days in question.

The children told police there was nobody home with them from Saturday night to Monday night, and texted their mother to ask permission to use the bathroom, to which she replied: “Quick. No lights,” WFSB reported.

Police said in the arrest warrant that the children told officers they had been left snacks to eat and Uber Eats was ordered for them several times.
