Recall alert: 23,000 Ferraris dating back to 2005 recalled for potential brake failure

Luxury automaker Ferrari is recalling thousands of cars for an issue that could render the brakes ineffective.

In documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ferrari said it had found a potential problem with the vehicles’ brake fluid reservoir cap that could lead to a leak and “partial or total loss of brake function.”

Ferrari said that 23,555 vehicles were impacted by the recall, which is a significant number for the automaker because of how few cars are manufactured each year. Ferrari manufacturers approximately 8,000 vehicles each year, which cost anywhere from $200,000 to more than $300,000, CNBC reported.

The models covered by the recall include some which have not been in production for more than a decade, including the 2005-2009 Ferrari 430 and 2005-2011 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, CNET reported.

Ferrari said that its dealers will replace the faulty brake fluid reservoir cap and update the vehicle’s software to provide a new warning message, free of charge. Letters are expected to be sent to owners in September.

Ferrari has dealt with a similar issue with its vehicles before, with nearly 10,000 of its 2010-2015 458 and 2016-2019 488 models recalled for the same issue, CNET reported.
