‘Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back’ tops box office 40 years after premiere

It has been 40 years since Luke Skywalker went to the Dagaboah system to be trained by Yoda. But “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” still can get fans into seats.

The film, which was previously rereleased 23 years ago, topped the weekend box office, Variety reported.

It’s currently playing at 483 locations.

Friday, it brought in $175,000 and was expected to end the weekend with ticket sales between $400,000 and $500,000, Entertainment Weekly reported.

The coronavirus pandemic has prompted rereleases of classic films at drive-in locations.

Other movies that are being brought back to the big screen include “Ghostbusters,” “Jaws” and “Jurassic Park,” Deadline reported.
