Surfer, 15, dies after being mauled by shark

SYDNEY — A 15-year-old surfer died Saturday in Australia after being bitten by a shark.

The teen was surfing at Wooli Beach in New South Wales around 2:30 p.m. when he was bitten. The bite caused severe injuries to his legs.

Several other surfers came over to help the teen to shore for medical attention. Despite the efforts, he died at the scene.

It was the second fatal shark attack in a week in Australia and the fifth this year. The country typically averages about three fatal shark attacks a year. The last time there were five deaths from shark attacks was in 2014.

A 20-year-old scuba diver who was spear fishing was fatally attacked off the coast of Queensland last Saturday.

A 60-year-old surfer died off Kingscliff in New South Wales in June. Zachary Robba, 23, a Queensland wildlife ranger, died after being attacked by a great white shark in April. A 57-year-old diver was killed in Western Australia in January.
