Thomas Henshall Jr., 37, was charged Saturday morning with failure to report the discovery of a dead body and evidence tampering after he admitted to driving the corpse across several county lines, bypassing both authorities and medical attention along the way, WTVC reported.

According to a news release issued by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, Henshall transported the tarp-wrapped body to the Nashville VA Medical Center in the back of his truck at around 5:15 p.m. Saturday. He claimed his mother, 60-year-old Danielle Bowen, committed suicide, WZTV reported.

Henshall reportedly told detectives that he was right next to his mother when she shot herself, but apparently told his girlfriend, who made the nearly 135-mile trek to Nashville with him, that he had discovered Bowen’s body in the woods, the TV station reported.

When police asked Henshall how his mother obtained a gun, however, he invoked his Miranda rights, ending the interview, WTVC reported.

The medical examiner confirmed that the body is Bowen’s and that she had a gunshot wound to the head, WZTV reported.
