Waffle with a side of celery: District apologizes for subpar school lunch

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. — A South Carolina school is under fire amid complaints about the lunch options being provided to students.

Fort Dorchester High School in North Charleston, South Carolina, resumed courses this month with plans for hybrid learning. Students attend in-person classes on select days and complete the rest of their studies remotely online.

On the days they go into school facilities, lunches are provided. The school has taken measures to slow the spread of COVID-19 by offering prepackaged meals for students to grab and go, but some teens say the lunches are not up to par.

Photos sent to WCBD-TV show plastic foam containers with a random assortment of foods: a waffle, turkey sausage patty, broccoli and celery. The meal also reportedly contained cold portions of fruit.

Patricia Raynor, a spokeswoman for the school district, told WCBD-TV the district had hired a contractor to provide meals for schools.

After learning about the waffle meal this week and conducting a brief investigation, officials said the meals were not up to standard and brought their concerns to the contractor.

Sodexo, the company that has been providing the meals, distributes meals to schools across the country.

The company said it would do better.
