Watch: man fights off a bear at his Florida home

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Video from a home surveillance system shows a man fighting off a bear in his own house.

The video, posted to Instagram, shows Walter Hickox on his porch as a bear lunges toward him, and he fights back, finally moving a bench in front of the door and running away screaming, “I just got attacked by a bear!”

Hickox told WFTV he wasn’t worried about his safety, he just wanted to protect his family, “Not a lot went through my head at the moment, other than what’s going to happen if he gets past me and into the house where the rest of my dogs and my wife was at.”

Hickox was not hurt and told WFTV he plans to install a door on the outside of the porch and also keep some bear spray nearby.

The National Park Service suggests making sure the bears have no access to food to prevent them from coming toward you. It also recommends carrying bear pepper spray, which is used in the same way you would protect yourself from an attacking person.

The bear that attacked Hickox has not been captured, WFTV reported.
