Waycross, Georgia feels impact of Tropical Storm Elsa, sees 3-5 inches of rain

WAYCROSS, Ga. — Waycross, Georgia felt the impact of Tropical Storm Elsa on Wednesday, seeing between 3-5 inches of rain around town. Action News Jax First Alert Weather Team said the center of Elsa passed over Waycross in the late afternoon/early evening.

“Every time we get rain like we get, the ditches stay level full across my whole yard,” neighbor Irving Thompson said. “My backyard is underwater.”

Neighbors in the Emerson Park area told Action News Jax they worried about the flooding around their streets and their homes. Some said standing water can be shin-level high but that they were used to these conditions.

“Right now, it will take a good week of sun to dry my yard out,” Thompson said. “When the storm comes, you know everyone out here looks to lose something because of the wind, rain and flooding.”

The First Alert Weather Team said sustained winds in Waycross were between 20-30mph. No matter what type of storm, sustained winds are what other Waycross neighbors fear.

“If the wind blows real hard it can get pretty scary,” Darryl Wilson said. “It sounds and feels like it’s fixing to go.”

Ware County Emergency Management told Action News Jax around 6:30p.m., downtown Waycross streets were flooded, some “impassable.” At last check, there were no reports of storm damage.
