World Golf Hall of Fame honors President George H.W. Bush's contributions to golf

Many are remembering President George H.W. Bush’s devotion to his family and country.

“He raised a great family,” Reba Webber said. “He was a great family man. He and his wife had an incredible relationship.”

Another passion of the former president’s – golf.

Bush was dedicated to seeing the game grow after learning to play at a young age, following in his father's and grandfather's footsteps.

He helped establish the President’s Cup and presided over The First Tee as it grew into one of the country’s most wide-ranging youth golf organizations.

“He’s really been steeped in the game for a long time in different ways and really shows how much he cares about it,” Jack Peter, president of the World Golf Hall of Fame, said.

Peter inducted Bush into the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine in 2011 in an intimate ceremony inside Bush's Houston office. He wasn't able to travel at the time.

"He was showing us different mementos from golf and his life and times," Peter said. "I think being recognized by the golf community with the Hall of Fame induction really meant a lot to him."

Inside Bush’s locker in St Augustine is a set of clubs and other mementos of his time on the greens.

It serves as a place for people to come and pay tribute to his support of the game and country.

"I'm going to remember him as a very fine man who did the best he could for the country," Webber, a visitor to the Hall of Fame, said.

“The silver lining is that he gets to be rejoined with Barbara so I’m sure they’re looking down with a big smile,” Peter said.

The Hall of Fame will pay tribute to Bush with a memorial and special exhibit.
