May 15 UPDATE: The First Alert Weather team is tracking a broad area of low pressure located in the Florida Straits. This system will move northeast through today and into the weekend. Tropical or subtropical development is possible late tonight or Saturday in the southwest Atlantic. However, this system is forecast to stay offshore. Will there be any impacts locally? Our area will see windy conditions closer to the coast and high rip current risks through the weekend.

The first name on the hurricane list is "Arthur.” Hurricane Hunters are scheduled to investigate this system later today, if necessary. Stay with the First Alert Weather team for the latest on the tropics.

Original Story from May 13 by Rich Jones, WOKV:

While no direct local impacts are expected, the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season could form over the weekend. Action News Jax Chief Meteorologist Mike Buresh says the subtropical development over the southwest Atlantic, north of the Bahamas, could become Arthur.

It would be the fifth consecutive year that we have had a named storm before the June 1st start of the hurricane season.

Buresh says northeast Florida could feel enhanced onshore flow and dangerous rip currents but otherwise no local impacts. Otherwise, our beautiful weather continues with below average temperatures and low humidity.
