2 men badly burned after fire spread to 4 boats in Green Cove Springs

Two people have second degree burns and a third person was hurt after several boats caught fire in Green Cove Springs on Saturday.

Police said two men were working on a boat near Bulkhead Road around 5:30 p.m. when it caught fire.

They said they turned off the electricity but they heard a pop and became surrounded by flames.

They jumped in the water and the flames spread to three other boats.

The men were taken to Orange Park Medical Center with first and second degree burns and will be transferred to a burn unit in Gainesville, police said.

A third person who was on the boat was injured but did not need to go to the hospital.

A 42-foot tall power boat valued at $1,500, 37-foot boat valued at $25,000 and two salvage sail boats were severely damaged.

Police said one boat sank after the flames spread.

Green Cove Springs Police Department, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation, State Fire Marshal, Coast Guard and Clay County Fire & Rescue were on scene.
