26 Duval elementary schools among the 300 ranked lowest in the state

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Numbers released Friday by the Florida Department of Education show 300 elementary schools have low performing scores. Twenty-six of them are in Duval County.

“It’s not a secret, depending on where you live depends on the quality of education you receive,” said Kisha Whitehurst, a mother.

Ramona Elementary School received a C for the last two school years. This year, it dropped to an F, the only school in the district to receive an F.

“There wasn’t enough resources there. The teachers, the administrator, staff, they all came out of their own pockets to fill in what was needed,” Whitehurst said.

But there’s some good news. Several schools, including Rufus E. Payne, Arlington and Brentwood jumped from an F to a C.

“The kids in this community are all very smart, very gifted, talented children. They all try their best,” she said.
